10:56 pm - Pumzi
I've been waiting to see the Kenyan Science Fiction short film Pumzi (2010) since I heard about it last year. It is now available on Netflix under a collection of films called Africa First: Volume One (2011). Pumzi was really good, and the other films were diverse and interesting too.

09:25 pm - Cilantro
Cilantro, as it is know in Americas, or the the leaf form of Coriander as it known else where in the world, is something I love, but is something that [info]geometrician hates. So sometimes, on nights when he's not in town, I sneak off and indulge in this forbidden herb.

Dining Out For Life Logo   Who wants to go to dine out and do good on Thursday, 28 April 2011?

That Thursday is international Dining Out For Life night in the Twin Cities, MN. A large number of restaurants and bars participate by donating a portion of their proceeds and collecting donations. 06:40 pm - bare
Last night my sister Claire ([info]minnesotatoast) was ASL interpreting a performance of bare at the Minneapolis Musical Theatre and she gave me a free ticket. I didn't know what to expect, but I liked it. If can you catch it while it's still here, I recommend it. It seems a bit like RENT in tone, and the start is a little rough, but some of the vocals are quite nice. Thanks, sis!

02:21 am - Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
On Monday night I went to go see "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" at the Lagoon Cinema in Uptown. I highly recommend it! It's a Finnish independent film, very off beat, and very good. It was based on a short film that obtained some cultish status on the Internet and a favorite of mine. I recently discovered that they then made a sequel short film, and now a full movie. It's only showing for one more night, so if you can make it on Tuesday, go see it. Its content is not appropriate for small children, Brittany from Glee, or others who still believe in a benevolent jolly altruistic philanthropic personification of capitalism. It's in a mix of English and Finnish with English subtitles.

07:02 pm - Halloween Post Mortem
In pretty much a replay of last year, for Outfits, I once again wore my Renaissance Festival garb, but [info]geometrician wore his KoL t-shirt. As usual, I handed out Fortune Cookies (this year I again got two boxes); 193 kids over about 5 hours. No pumpkin this year, but I did put the string of pumpkin lights. With the new paint job on the house and the repairs to the front porch complete, it was my hope that no one would notice the same old costume on my part. Fancy, with the help of Kobe and Tilly, defended the house loudly, when they were not otherwise occupied mooching in the kitchen.

08:38 pm - Marketing Fail
So, a while back there was a VW commercial...
  • VW Mr. Roboto Commercial
    YouTube )
...so I went out and bought a copy of the CD Mr. Roboto by Styx.
I mean seriously, I wonder how much sales of that album jumped after that commercial aired?
I wonder if it was joint marketing or if there were kick-backs or royalties.
So now there's this commercial...
  • AT&T Commercial - Rethink Possible
    YouTube )
...and I want to watch the original Willy Wonka & the Chocoloate Factory (1981).

What are some of your favorite examples of marketing fail?

[info]minnesotatoast hosted a lovely Gingerbread party this last weekend. [info]geometrician and I made a home together. Then, because we're dorks and we both play Kingdom of Loathing too much, we made a Spooky Mushroom to guard our campground. 01:58 pm - Tornadoes: Blustery Things For Other People
First off, thank you to everyone who called, texted, emailed, Fackbooked, and more. The Tornado did seem to touch down near me, but I was lucky. I'm fine. Fancy is fine. The house is fine; although we're less one more tree (which the city is removing as I type this) and may have lost the Brust family tree. The tree that fell missed my house by a hair, some of my other bushed and trees helped deflect it. I don't think there's any damage, but I know better tomorrow. I'm thinking at most some small scratched paint.

That said, the houses behind me got hit harder. A dozen trees down in the intersection behind me. Cars and houses damaged, but very few, if any people injuries. Messed up traffic for a while on the residential streets.

The most annoying thing was the air raid siren 19 minutes after it hit, and the power outage. What should I do while the power is out? Most of the things I should do involved power - laundry, catching up on DVR stuff, music, vacuuming, shopping (getting the car out of the garage would be an ordeal without power), and reading later by candle light was not appealing. Although I am certain Fancy would disagree, tossing the ball is not a marathon event.

My lovely permanent interlocking aluminum roof, I think, weathered it all well. Thanks to the various vendors who have given me LED key chain lights at trade shows; those came in handy. My house is lovely by candle light. Do they make natural gas fueled electric generators?

One of my co-workers asked if I had seen Dorothy & Toto, I said "every day".

I still need to post the Iron Chef results, sorry for the delay.

We will have Sci Fi Friday tomorrow night. We will be watching all of the Torchwood mini-series "Children of Earth", starting at 7 PM sharp (since we have a lot of content to get through).

11:11 pm - Paracryophilia
We were watching Torchwood Season 2 Episode 3 "To the Last Man" and decided we needed a new term. This is the term for when you revive people from suspended animation so you can have sex with them. It's not necrophilia (sex with dead things) because they're not dead, and it's not cryophilia (sex with frozen things) because they're re-animated. I am happy to say, when I Googled it, I got not hits, so perhaps I just created a new word!

06:00 pm - Arun's
While in Chicago, I had a wonderful meal. [info]bearmn managed to get us into a rather exclusive Thai Restaurant. With [info]joshjeffcoat and [info]geometrician in attendance, we had a wonderful 12 course custom prix fixe menu. It was a grand prelude to my birthday.
Arun's Restaurant
4156 North Kedzie Avenue
Chicago, IL 60618-2440
(773) 539-1909
The head chef comes out and talks with you, finds out your likes and dislikes, and then build the menu for you based on your tastes and what's fresh that night. The table next to us was doing this experience too, and some of their dishes were different from ours. At the end of the meal, the chef gave us a list of what she prepared for us.

Appetizers
  1. Imperial rice cup topped with seasoned minced chicken, sweet turnip and scallion.

  2. Bite-sized salad of fresh Cha-Plue leaf (betel nut leaf) with bits of fresh herbs:
ginger, shallot, lime, peanuts and toasty coconut flakes. Hand-wrap the leaf; spoon over with a tamarind-coconut sauce; and enjoy a whole bite at one time.

  3. Chicken roll inserted with burdock, carrot, shitake mushroom sprinkled with lemon zest, toasted sesame seed and fragrance pepper.

  4. Delicate rice dumpling filled with chicken, shrimp and jicama; served on the bed of sweet & sour chili vinaigrette.

  5. Coconut vermicelli with diced prawn and tofu in a black bean-coconut sauce; accompanied by golden fried prawn, crisp bean sprouts and fresh garlic chives.

  6. Thai rice pasta ladled with spicy broth of minced pork, tomato, shredded pickled cabbage, bean sprouts, chopped scallion and fried shallot.
Entrees
  1. Mussaman beef in a rich coconut-curried sauce, featuring tantalizing spices and refreshing Thai herbs.

  2. Sauteed succulent lobster and sea scallop in ginger-Kabocha sauce.

  3. Lightly fried striped bass filet graced with spicy chili-garlic; garnished with an exquisitely carved carrot fish.

  4. Stir-fried minced chicken with mushroom, crushed garlic, Thai chilies and holy basil leaves.
Desserst
  1. Sweet sticky rice served with golden ripe mango and rich mango coulis.

  2. A mixed sorbet of okra blossom and lychee, accompanied by poached baby pear and dotted with sweet raspberry coulis.
My mother gave me a book a while back. I found out later that this experiences is listed in 1000 Places To See Before You Die. Woot! Check another one off the list!

06:01 pm - Doctor Mame & Auntie Woof
Someday, I want to be in a Jonathan Robinson video. I don't need to be the star, but in there somewhere, having fun. If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, I would love to see Doctor Woof meet Auntie Mame; I could see them being Bosum Buddies. Truly, I don't know where I come up with these things sometimes.

"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
- Andy Warhol -

"But [info]perkk," you say, "you're already famous!"; And like Buttercup in the Princess Bride, I humbly note "Only compared to some." By some measures I've probably already had my 15 minutes. Is it greedy to want more? 1 I won't list my many accomplishments; I'll leave that to my adoring fans. Yet it's interesting how I can feel like I haven't accomplished anything. 2 Like Celeste Talbert in Soapdish, it's probably a crutch.

1 - That's a rhetorical question, don't even think of quipping it.
2 - That's blatant comment whoring, with follow-up pleading.

12:14 pm - The Fancyland Diaries
Fancy is doing well. She's a good dog. She is fleet of paw, but recently she seems to have confused going swift with going Swiffer. It would seem that in the spring when the air is dry and cool, before the grass has gown, Fancy can build up some static and turn into a giant dirt & dust collector, tracking all of it in to the house. It was crazy. I could pat her and watch the clouds of dust raise and then move back onto her.

Needless to say, this lead to a couple of spats of dog baths and house cleanings. Fancy is really good about baths, but with her think coat, she takes quite a while to dry. I found a shampoo which incidentally reduces her static potential (moisturize, moisturize, moisturize). In retrospect, I wonder if I could have found a way to make her clean my house for me first.

I took Fancy for a walk around Lake Harriet (2.75 mi) the other day and she was a perfect lady. I am amazed at how intelligent she is; she can take some of the most subtle of queues when calm. She ignored all of the joggers that passed, except for the cute one, probably because she sensed I was ogling him. He put his hand down to be sniffed as he passed; some bitches get all the luck. I may have to teach her to trip or tangle on command. When it starts running for the season, I hope I can take her on the Streetcar? I bet she will put her head out the window.

Last night I saw a trailer for the new Monsters vs. Aliens movie, which had a spoof of the theme song for The Monkeys - Hey, Hey, We're the Monsters.

When I was but a wee lad, I had several albums by The Monkey on vinyl (LP) until my mom mysteriously, suddenly, and rather seemingly arbitrarily got rid of them (I think she was quite sick of me playing them over and over). Now, as an adult, in retrospect, I think I should ask her about that...

Obvious generational emotional hooks aside, I look forward to the new film; It should be schlocky (it is DreamWorks after all), but reasonably fun.

03:41 pm - Punny Wine
Last night at dinner with my folks, my friends Andrews & Katherine brought some homemade mead, and some wine. One of the wines was called "Cardinal Zin". Andrew indicated it was from a small some what sporadic boutique California vineyard called Bonny Doon. So, confusing it with Brigadoon, I asked if they only made a batch of wine once every hundred years. That got the puns rolling, with such gems as:

We should have started with...
  • Original Zin
If we had a wine tasting party it could be...
  • Seven Deadly Zins
And then I noted that if it was a particularly festive blended red, we could call it...
  • Zin-Zin-Syrah
Real or imaginary, what are some fun wine names?

11:14 pm - Cassoulet
When I was in London, I had (what I know now was a cheap version of) Cassoulet; and I've been thinking about it ever since. It's basically a French version of pork & beans. [info]rvrjoe775 talked about how he and [info]drewan, and [info]lakeboy_55 had Cassoulet at Chez [info]minnehaha just the other day. After [info]bikerbear's famously yummy lasagna last night; I couldn't stand it any longer. So, today I made Cassoulet!

I looked up several recipes on-line and synthesized the relevant knowledge. Of course, I didn't pick one of the quick & easy ones. I only made a half-batch, and still there's a ton of it. I think it's been quite a while since I made such a complex recipe. Roasting the duck, stewing the beans & sausages, braising the pork & lamb, and then putting it all together and baking it.

In a fit of poor planning, I last-minute called a few friends and family to see if any could come over to try it. Thankfully, [info]rvrjoe775 was able to make it and give me a comparative review, so I didn't have to dine all alone. It was so yummy! Tomorrow my mom & dad, and sister ([info]minnesotatoast) are stopping by to pick up left-overs. Needles to say, I was Fancy's Best Friend™ all day!

All I have to say it, after all that work, they better re-heat fabulously! It's ability to re-heat that may be the factor that tips me one way or the other between - it was so much work vs. it was so yummy!

06:41 pm - Birthday Earworm
I'm obsession about a "Happy Birthday (remix)" by Craymo (Brandon Jarrett) I heard on the Soupy Gato podcast #269. I love this song!

You can listen to it on-line from Craymo's MySpace Page HERE.

12:30 pm - ZOMG CUTE MOO!
[info]barak - While I could imagine you doing this, and I really don't care who you sleep with, this just isn't going to happen under my roof (in the yard maybe, but certainly not in the house).

At the request of [info]riotclitshave who hosts the image, I provide the link to her post rather than hotlink her image into this post. FYI - The image is very cute and work save, but other posts by this same author may not be work safe (should you choose to browse further).
