06:01 pm - Doctor Mame & Auntie Woof Someday, I want to be in a Jonathan Robinson video. I don't need to be the star, but in there somewhere, having fun. If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, I would love to see Doctor Woof meet Auntie Mame; I could see them being Bosum Buddies. Truly, I don't know where I come up with these things sometimes.
"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." - Andy Warhol - "But perkk," you say, "you're already famous!"; And like Buttercup in the Princess Bride, I humbly note "Only compared to some." By some measures I've probably already had my 15 minutes. Is it greedy to want more? 1 I won't list my many accomplishments; I'll leave that to my adoring fans. Yet it's interesting how I can feel like I haven't accomplished anything. 2 Like Celeste Talbert in Soapdish, it's probably a crutch.

12:14 pm - The Fancyland Diaries Fancy is doing well. She's a good dog. She is fleet of paw, but recently she seems to have confused going swift with going Swiffer. It would seem that in the spring when the air is dry and cool, before the grass has gown, Fancy can build up some static and turn into a giant dirt & dust collector, tracking all of it in to the house. It was crazy. I could pat her and watch the clouds of dust raise and then move back onto her.
Needless to say, this lead to a couple of spats of dog baths and house cleanings. Fancy is really good about baths, but with her think coat, she takes quite a while to dry. I found a shampoo which incidentally reduces her static potential (moisturize, moisturize, moisturize). In retrospect, I wonder if I could have found a way to make her clean my house for me first.
I took Fancy for a walk around Lake Harriet (2.75 mi) the other day and she was a perfect lady. I am amazed at how intelligent she is; she can take some of the most subtle of queues when calm. She ignored all of the joggers that passed, except for the cute one, probably because she sensed I was ogling him. He put his hand down to be sniffed as he passed; some bitches get all the luck. I may have to teach her to trip or tangle on command. When it starts running for the season, I hope I can take her on the Streetcar? I bet she will put her head out the window. 05:57 pm - Dining Out For Life
 | | Who wants to go to dine out and do good on Thursday, 30 April 2008?
That Thursday is international Dining Out For Life night in the Twin Cities, MN. A large number of restaurants and bars participate by donating a portion of their proceeds and collecting donations. The funds raised go to The Aliveness Project; and it helps stimulate small business in our lagging economy.
As is often the case, I am sure there will be many bevvies of fashionable folk organizing dinner groups, so get your reservations in sooner rather than later. At the suggestion of my sister, this year we will be trying some Latin Fusion. |

01:26 am - The Monster Monkeys Last night I saw a trailer for the new Monsters vs. Aliens movie, which had a spoof of the theme song for The Monkeys - Hey, Hey, We're the Monsters.
When I was but a wee lad, I had several albums by The Monkey on vinyl (LP) until my mom mysteriously, suddenly, and rather seemingly arbitrarily got rid of them (I think she was quite sick of me playing them over and over). Now, as an adult, in retrospect, I think I should ask her about that...

11:14 pm - Cassoulet When I was in London, I had (what I know now was a cheap version of) Cassoulet; and I've been thinking about it ever since. It's basically a French version of pork & beans. rvrjoe775 talked about how he and drewan, and lakeboy_55 had Cassoulet at Chez minnehaha just the other day. After bikerbear's famously yummy lasagna last night; I couldn't stand it any longer. So, today I made Cassoulet!
I looked up several recipes on-line and synthesized the relevant knowledge. Of course, I didn't pick one of the quick & easy ones. I only made a half-batch, and still there's a ton of it. I think it's been quite a while since I made such a complex recipe. Roasting the duck, stewing the beans & sausages, braising the pork & lamb, and then putting it all together and baking it.
In a fit of poor planning, I last-minute called a few friends and family to see if any could come over to try it. Thankfully, rvrjoe775 was able to make it and give me a comparative review, so I didn't have to dine all alone. It was so yummy! Tomorrow my mom & dad, and sister ( minnesotatoast) are stopping by to pick up left-overs. Needles to say, I was Fancy's Best Friend™ all day!
All I have to say it, after all that work, they better re-heat fabulously! It's ability to re-heat that may be the factor that tips me one way or the other between - it was so much work vs. it was so yummy!

So I invert it, and invite people here. I don't expect a big turn out. It is the high holy gay holiday after all (and I dread to think what the crowds must be like at the bars). But if even a few can make it, it's a party!
Big thanks and hugs to gotmoof, bearnight, rebisbear & Kameron, and huladavid. For this week's Sci Fi Friday, we thought to watch Dark Crystal, but instead we watched Little Shop of Horrors as a semi-sing-a-long.
Does my attire count as cosplay?
As a home owner, it's my privilege to hand out candy. This year, yet again, I went through a whole case of individual wrap fortune cookies - they're better for the kids than the other higher sugar content treats; they're clearly commercial; the look big; and the kids love them like lottery tickets.
They will take their cookies home, and as they read their fortunes & platitudes they will reinforce the false sense of security that only the innocence of childhood can afford. This will set the stage for my future rule of the world, through a web of happy thoughts and good intentions.
This year, I actually decorated. gotmoof caught me disentangling some of the lights. He said it was cute or something.
The costumes and kids were so cute. The very young, tongue-tied and shy. There were even more kids this year. Even without my engraved name tag, one of the parents recognized me and my plans for world domination! A couple of superheros threatened to foil my plans to rule the world, but I just laughed (it's about standards).
The best costume was a young pink Triceratops princess. Runner up, the small cowboy on stuffed horse; after a full night of Trick-or-Treating, the horse looked a little beat (perhaps even dead, Ha!) and not "Bad" at all. This year quality was definitely up a notch from previous years; not too many Homicidal Maniacs (they look like everyone else).
mindplay is collecting pictures of people's pumpkins. Here's mine for this year. I did a lattice structure which then shriveled and dried. It shows how we're all connected; an inspiration for how I will rule the world. It's not a perfect metaphor.
My famously successful Jack-O-Lantern drew many comments. Well, I say famous in that it's now on the Internet, and successful in that I achieved my objective, it was noticed. It was less successful in that the amount of work it took spurred my testosterone laden house mate ilv2laff to carve three other "fun" pumpkins with his fancy tools and stuff, which were then placed next to mine. People ooh'ed and ah'ed over his, and probably took pictures or something. Balls!
At least I roasted my seeds. I soaked them over night in Rosemary, Garlic, Thin Soy Sauce (which is a bit of a misnomer since it has a stronger flavor and more salt than average Soy Sauce) and a little Sriracha before baking them. They turned out okay. The recipe is coming along nicely, but needs more work, and salt. |

| | Picture by gotmoof (click for larger) | I created something new this evening. It was super yummy! I was inspired by a dish I had at a friend's party a few years ago. I think I did good! I was going to surprise bikerbear, but he had some kind of a wardrobe failure and couldn't make it. But luckily gotmoof and ilv2laff were around to help consume them.- 1 lb. Ground Lamb
- 1 medium Onion
- 1 bulb of Garlic
- 1 jar of Green Olives with Pimentos (drained 5¾ oz)
- 1 can of Water Chestnuts (drained 5 oz)
- 2 pkgs of crumbled Feta Cheese (4 oz each)
- 2 Eggs
- 2 pkg Wonton Wrappers (60 count each)
Mince, mix, stuff, fry. I usually use whipped egg to seal the sachets. The fryer should be at around 400°F (thanks to ghostcub for the tip), to fry to golden in about 3 minutes, when boiling seems to start to slow. The wontons will float, so you'll want to stir and submerge them while cooking for an even finish. Cool a little on towels or rack to remove excess oil, serve warm/hot (but they're good cold too). Next time I may add some Oregano. Maybe serve with lemon wedges for juice sprinkles or Tzatziki.

07:00 pm - Apples I never thought myself an apple snob. But when I find people who think that apples are merely "red" or "green", or who presume that "yellow" = "not ripe yet"; I just have to worry about what they may be missing.
When you think of the primary agricultural products of Minnesota, then certainly corn, beets, peas, and maybe soybeans are bigger crops. Unless you are or have been involved in an apple-related industry, you've probably never had reason to consider the sources of Malus domestica in context. Here in Minnesota, we have more apple cultivars available to us than most other parts of the world; due largely in part to more 75 years of work at the University of Minnesota, which has produced quite a number of hardy cultivars, which are more well suited to northern climates.
A few years ago, in the autumn, I went to an orchard and picked a bushel of Cortlands. As I was picking them, the first snow of the season started to fall - slow, big, fluffy flakes (I felt like Snow White). I juiced the apples and fermented the result to make hard cider. It turned out okay, but I have decided that next time I'll pick a different cultivar, one more suited to this objective. I think I still have one small bottle left of it; I haven't opened it, but it doesn't look like it's gone bad yet. When ever I go to England, I love finding new ciders to try; but I have to be careful because their alcohol content tends to be higher and packs quite a sneak-up-on-you punch.
